building my first FPV drone from scratch
From soldering ESCs to tuning PIDs — a hands-on journey into the world of first-person-view racing drones.
Choosing the parts
The frame, motors, flight controller and ESC stack form the foundation. I went with a 5-inch freestyle frame to balance agility and durability. Picking components that play well together is half the challenge.
The build process
Soldering tiny wires to a flight controller is a lesson in patience. Every connection matters — a cold joint means a crash. I documented every step to make troubleshooting easier when things inevitably went wrong.
First flights and tuning
The first hover is pure adrenaline. But the real work starts with PID tuning — adjusting how the drone responds to stick inputs. It took dozens of flights and battery packs to get it feeling right.
